Chapter Eight

“Your Royal Majesty, our seers have seen the death of the lost Princess. She can no longer protect the last Huntress of the Hunter line.” The Page of Honour’s head was still bowed.

King Marcus sat forward and looked sternly at his royal page. One of many in the Palace, Leland was not the brightest flame in the Kingdom but he was the son of the powerful Duke of Lambeth, and having him here kept that duke content, and when he was happy that meant his personal army was not a threat to Marcus.

Despite that, he still had fun making Leland’s life difficult.

“You are not displaying the proper amount of grief, Leland, your voice is not heavy with sorrow.”

“I apologize, sire. The Kingdom has lost a bright light.” Leland once again dipped his head in reverence while still balancing himself on one knee.

Marcus wanted to hold a state funeral for the daughter he’d barely known. Over the last one hundred and fifty years, he’d found creative ways to work himself into his daughter’s life without her actually knowing he was there.

He had his Royal High Mages to thank for that, for they were the ones that had crafted the many faces for him, his illusions had been so superior that even Eustacia had not sensed them, and she had been a strong mage.

As it stood now, he had no hope to see his line continue on the throne. The Aurelius-Lyon dynasty had ruled Shardizar for over one thousand years, to know he would be the last Aurelius-Lyon King was a bitter pill for him to swallow.

“Prepare the Royal Flying Ship. I want to collect her body personally, and I also want to see that her niece is properly dealt with. I want to know that the Hunter Legacy is gone once and for all.”

It was a shame that Little Red had to die. She had been a charmingly sweet child and his daughter had loved her like she’d been her own, so he knew that killing her would be against Eustacia’s wishes and yet—he couldn’t allow Little Red to live. He had to finish what Lady Red had started by ending the life of her namesake and the heir to her huntress mantle.

She had all of the powers that Avalona the Elder had possessed and then some—and though his seers told him that Little Red lacked the hunger for the kill that Lady Red had possessed, he could not heed their advice and allow Little Red to live. She could resurrect the hunters and that would throw the realm into chaos.

Not that they were faring that well without the Hunters—the group that Avalona the Elder had led had been known as the
